Hanwha Systems (KRX:272210) signed a contract with the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) to develop a space-based space surveillance satellite and a ground-linked space situational awareness system.

This is the company's full-scale participation as a private system developer for the National Space Situational Awareness System (K-SSA), according to a statement on Friday.

Under the contract, Hanwha Systems will build the surveillance satellite, establish the ground-linked awareness system, integrate subsystems, and conduct testing and verification.

The microsatellite will orbit at roughly 480 km, carrying an optical camera to detect and track space objects in real time and gather data for collision risk analysis.

The effort addresses rising collision risks from the surge in low-orbit satellites, aiming to protect national space assets and ground safety.
